Marketing of The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project is a found-footage style supernatural horror film about three student film makers hiking to the Black Hills to film a documentary about a local legend, the Blair Witch. The three disappear, but their equipment and footage is found a year later, and the footage is presented as the film.

-Faux reports and interviews
The makers of The Blair Witch Project attempted to pass off the film as all real found footage, making the viewers think that the film was grounded in reality and did happen.
The film's official website featured faux police reports and "news-reel" style interviews, which helped spark debate over whether or not The Blair Witch was a real film or a work of fiction.
During screenings of the film, the filmmakers would pass out flyers of the "missing" students and would ask viewers to come forward with any information about them. The film's IMDb page listed the actors as "missing, presumed dead" for the first year of the film's release.

The poster for The Blair Witch Project features one of the main characters, Heather, staring at the "viewer" with a flashlight pointed at her face, the flashlight being the only source of light in the poster. The woods that the characters venture into are behind her. The use of mainly a black and grey color scheme helps set the eerie tone of the film.
