Marketing of A Quiet Place

The post-apocalyptic horror film, A Quiet Place (2018), grossed around 20 times its budget at the box office, thanks to its use of a variety of marketing tactics.

-Trailers
The first trailer for A Quiet Place was released in November 2017. A second 30 second long trailer was shown during the Super Bowl LII. This trailer gained over a million views on youtube. The other trailers, and this one, are mostly void of dialogue.

About a month before the film's premiere, John Krainski, one of the film's stars and the director, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to present the full trailer. Ellen herself later parodied A Quiet Place by showing a trailer for the film with herself crudely green-screened upon a few shots. These shots included her using a blender loudly while eating and her firing a flare gun into the air, which results in Krainski's character getting killed by the movie's monster.

Short versions of the movie's official trailer were shown at the Southwest Film Festival, and this trailer provided a slight interactive element. They asked the audience to turn their phone's sounds off, because, as the movie's tag-line says, "If they hear you, they hunt you."

-Poster
The most recognizable A Quiet Place poster is the first and only domestic one.

This poster features Evelyn (Emily Blunt) hiding in a bathtub in a dirty house. The shadow of one of the creatures is seen in the middle of the poster. The use of grey-green colors conveys darkness and unkempt, and this combination is common in horror film posters.
