Film Research - Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a 1978 musical dark comedy film. It had an estimated $100,000 budget, and made $567,000 at the box office. The film stars David Miller, George Wilson, and Costa Dillon, and has been nominated for the"Stinker Award" for the "Stinkers Bad Movie Awards". Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is about tomatoes gaining sentience and revolting against humanity. The first two minutes of the film are taken up by scrolling text saying that when the film The Birds was released, people thought it was laughable, until 7.5 million black birds invaded a town in Kentucky. The rest of the first two minutes are taken up by a scene that shows a woman washing dishes until a tomato comes out of her sink and corners her. The fade to black and chilling music once the scene is over suggests that the tomato has killed the woman. The tomato murder scene is framed as if a real murderer was present. The shot of the tomato emerging from the sink is inter-spliced with footage of the woman in terror. No background music is present during the scene, only noises coming from the tomato and the woman's screams.

How did your production skills develop throughout this project? My partner and my production skills advanced throughout our project in multiple ways. When we first put our film together, we had trouble trimming down clips into the right size, and it took more time than it should have to get a cohesive and not overly long sequence of shots together. We also had difficulty with editing sound bytes to the appropriate volume and length. However, once we began our second cut of the film, we had improved our skills greatly in the trimming area. We were able to get more concise cuts of the film footage and our ability to put the clips together improved as well. Where we once had struggled with getting the clips tacked onto each other precisely we now handled efficiently. Once we began working on the third quarter draft of the film, we figured out how to easily increase the volume of sound bytes, which helped us with our small jump scare of the demon banging within the ice machine. Shot list for second quarter submission

The first shot of the film is a wide shot that follows the actor. We used this shot as it gave us the perfect opportunity to add the opening credits to the film. The third shot is a match shot, as it begins where the camera was last pointed. The camera then follows the actor to the training room. Our first shot of the actor entering the training room is a mid shot. We used it to capture the expressions of the actor and to give enough room for the flickering lights to work. This over the shoulder shot shows the actor getting a cup from under the sink. As the actor lifts the icebox and the demon stretches out it's hand, a close up is used to show the actor's hands. The final shot of the film is a two-shot, as the two actors are shown in it.

Project Selection - Film

I believe that creating a film for the project selection is the right fit for me. While watching the Newsroom, I saw the way how professionals filmed their show and how they edited together scripts. I think that editing the shots together could be a challenge for me because I might feel like my finished product isn't good enough. Sticking to a filming schedule might also be a challenge because I may want to add more shots than originally intended. However, after watching the Making of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I saw that filming can prove to be interesting. I think that the filming and directing process is something that I would excel in. I have always liked being behind a camera, ever since I was 5 years old. I can keep a level head when I get stressed about things, which is a good skill to have if one is a directors. Overall, I believe that creating a film is the perfect fit for me.
